Mark 9
Mark 9:1 And he sayd vnto them: Verely I saye vnto you: There be some of them that stande here, whiche shall not taste of death tyll they haue sene the kyngedom of God come wyth power.
Jesus is transfigured.
Mark 9:2 And after .vi. dayes Iesus toke Peter, Iames and Iohan, and leade them vp into an hye mountayne oute of the waye alone & he was transfigured before them. Mark 9:3 And hys rayment did shyne, and was made very whyte, euen as snowe: so whyte as no fuller can make vpon the earth. Mark 9:4 And there apeared vnto them Helyas with Moyses, & they talke with Iesu. Mark 9:5 And Peter aunswered and sayde to Iesu: Master here is a good beyng for vs, let vs make thre tabernacles, one for the, one for Moyses, and an other for Helyas. Mark 9:6 And yet he wyste not what he sayde, for they were afrayde. Mark 9:7 And there was a cloude þt shadowed them. And a voyce came out of the cloud saying: This is my deare sonne, heare hym. Mark 9:8 And sodenly, they loked rounde aboute them, and sawe no man more then Iesus only with them. Mark 9:9 And as they came doune from the hyll, he charged theym that they shoulde tell no man what they had sene, tyl the sonne of man were rysen from death agayne. Mark 9:10 And they kepte þe saying with them, and demaunded one of another, what that rising from death agayn should meane?
He instructeth his disciples concerning the coming of Elias:
Mark 9:11 And they axed him sayinge: Why then saye the Scribes that Helyas must firste come Mark 9:12 He aunswered and sayde vnto them: Helias verely shal first come and restore all thinges. And also the sonne of man as it is written, shall suffer many thynges, and shalbe set at nought. Mark 9:13 Moreouer I saye vnto you that Helyas is come, and they haue done vnto hym whatsoeuer pleased theym, as it is written of hym.
casteth forth a dumb and deaf spirit:
Mark 9:14 And he came to hys disciples, & saw muche people about them, and the Scribes disputing with them. Mark 9:15 And strayght waye all the people when they behelde hym, were amased, & ranne to hym, and saluted hym. Mark 9:16 And he sayde vnto the Scribes: what dispute ye with them? Mark 9:17 And one of the company aunswered & said: Master, I haue broughte my sonne vnto the which hath a domme spirite. Mark 9:18 And whensoeuer he taketh hym, he teareth hym, and he fometh and gnasheth with hys tethe, & pyneth away. And I spake to thy disciples that they should caste him out, and they coulde not. Mark 9:19 He aunswered him and sayd: O generation without fayth, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? Brynge hym vnto me. Mark 9:20 And they broughte hym vnto him. And assone as þe spirite saw him, he tare him. And he fell doune on the grounde, walowing and fomynge. Mark 9:21 And he axed his father: howe long is it ago, sence this hath happened him? And he sayde, of a chylde: Mark 9:22 & ofte times casteth him into the fyre, and also into the water too destroye him. But if thou canste do anything, haue mercy on vs, and helpe vs. Mark 9:23 And Iesus sayd vnto him: yea, if thou couldest beleue, al thinges are possible to him that beleueth. Mark 9:24 And strayght way the father of the chylde cryed with teares saying: Lorde I beleue, helpe myne vnbelefe. Mark 9:25 When Iesus sawe that the people came runnyng together vnto him, he rebuked the foule spirit, saying vnto him: Thou domme & deaf spirite, I charge the come out of him, & enter no more into him. Mark 9:26 And the spirit cryed & rent him sore, and came out. And he was as one þt had bene dead, in so much that many sayd, he is dead. Mark 9:27 But Iesus caught his hande and lyft him vp: and he rose. Mark 9:28 And when he was come into the house, his disciples axed him secretly why could not we cast him out? Mark 9:29 And he sayed vnto them: this kynde can by no nother meanes come forth but by prayer and fastinge.
foretelleth his death and resurrection:
Mark 9:30 And they departed thence, and toke theyr iorney through Galile, and he would not that any man should haue knowen it. Mark 9:31 For he taught his disciples, and sayde vnto them: the sonne of man shalbe deliuered into the handes of men, and they shall kyll hym, and after that he is kylled he shall ryse agayne the thyrde daye. Mark 9:32 But they wiste not what that saying meante, and were afrayed to axe hym.
exhorteth his disciples to humility:
Mark 9:33 And he came to Capernaum. And when he was come into an house, he axed theym: what was it that ye disputed betwene you by the waye? Mark 9:34 And they helde theyr peace: for by the waye they reasoned among them selues, who should be the chiefest. Mark 9:35 And he sate doune and called the twelue vnto hym, and sayde vnto them: if any man desire to be first, the same shal be last of all, & seruaunt vnto all. Mark 9:36 And he toke a chylde, & set him in the middes of them: & toke hym in his armes and sayde vnto them: Mark 9:37 Whosoeuer receyueth any such a chyld in my name receyueth me. And whosoeuer receyueth me, receyueth not me, but him that sent me.
bidding them not to prohibit such as be not against them, nor to give offence to any of the faithful.
Mark 9:38 Ihon aunswered him saying: Maister, we sawe one castinge out deuels in thy name whiche foloweth not vs and we forbade hym, because he foloweth vs not. Mark 9:39 But Iesus sayd forbid him not. For there is no man that shall do a miracle in my name, þt can lightly speake euill of me. Mark 9:40 Whosoeuer is not agaynste you, is on your part. Mark 9:41 And whosoeuer shall geue you a cuppe of water to drinke for my names sake, because ye belonge to Christe, verelye I saye vnto you, he shall not lowse his rewarde. Mark 9:42 And whosoeuer shall offende one of these litelons, that beleue in me, it were better for him that a milstone were hanged aboute hys necke, & that he were caste into the sea. Mark 9:43 Wherfore if thy hande offende the, cut hym of. It is better for the, to enter into lyfe maymed, then hauing two handes, go into hel, into fyre that neuer shal be quenched, Mark 9:44 where their worme dyeth not, and the fyre neuer goeth out. Mark 9:45 Likekewise if thy fote offende the, cut him of. For it is better for the to go halt into life, then hauinge two fete to be caste into hell, into fyre þt neuer shalbe quenched: Mark 9:46 where their worme dyeth not, and the fyre neuer goeth out. Mark 9:47 Euen so if thyne eye offende the, plucke him out. It is better for the to go into the kyngedome of God with one eye, then hauing two eies to be cast into hel fyre: Mark 9:48 where their worm dieth not, and the fyre neuer goeth out. Mark 9:49 Euery man therfore shalbe salted wyth fyre. And euery sacrifice shalbe seasoned with salt, Mark 9:50 Salt is good. But if the salt be vnsauery what shall ye sate therwith? Se that ye haue salt in your selues, & haue peace amonge your selues, one with another.
